Loch Ness Monster challenges “Sharky” in battle of the mascots

The Loch Ness Monster has challenged the Sale Sharks mascot “Sharky” to a competitive face off to determine who deserves the title of ‘Fittest of the Monsters’.
The competitors came face-to-face for the first time today at Philips Park, Manchester, in an opportunity to weigh up the competition and attempt to formulate a winning strategy before the First Mini Monster duathlon on Sunday 28 June.
Passers-by in Philips Park were taken aback by the appearance of “Nessie”, the official mascot for the mini monster race, and Sharky who seemed to be using their local park as a training ground.
The Mini Monster event, which aims to raise money for Save the Children, is a family fun running and cycling team event. With a family race and an adult race almost anyone will be able to bike or run around the course.
The duathlon is hosted and organised by transport giant, FirstGroup, who own Manchester based train operator First TransPennine Express and First Bus.
Vernon Barker, Managing Director of First TransPennine Express, said: “The First Mini Monster event is the perfect opportunity for the ultimate battle of the monsters. It will not only be an enjoyable day out for the family but also a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a great cause. I would encourage people to sign up while places are still available.”
The First Mini Monster event originates from the larger First Monster duathlon, a gruelling 120km around the shores of Loch Ness. Nessie travelled especially to Manchester from Loch Ness to support the event that originated in his hometown.
Entry to the Manchester First Mini Monster Challenge is only £5 per person (or £20 per team). First Group will donate 25 percent of the entry fee to Save the Children. All teams who enter and take part in the challenge will also be entered into a prize draw to win four first class tickets to travel with First TransPennine Express.
